2019 Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Jonathan Marshall

Participated on the varsity baseball team the last two years. He helped lead the baseball program to its first league title in over 10 years and a #2 seed in the CIF playoffs.

Jonathan has been named as a San Diego Union-Tribune Scholar-Athlete, as well as the U-T Prep Athlete of the Week. He was named first team all-league and defensive player of the year by his teammates. He has been on the honor roll all four years. He has been granted the Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish and is an AP Scholar with Distinction. Jonathan’s overall GPA is an incredible 4.37.

Coach Sheldon Watkins said, “In my 15 years as a high school baseball coach I have never been around a more respectful and talented player. Humility is the first word that comes to mind when I think of Jonathan.”

Chemistry Teacher, Mr. Kiffe remembers,

“Jonathan is the definition of a scholar-athlete.  He competes in the classroom and outside with determination, grit, and passion.  He is a role model to his fellow classmates by his work ethic, integrity, and charisma.  (Funny story.  I had Jonathan Marshall as a junior and now as a senior.  During this senior year, I called him Marshall one day in class.  He looked at me with a confused look as if to say who is Marshall, not realizing I was calling him by his last name.  He then said, Mr. Kiffe my name isn’t Marshall.  I still laugh about it to this day and still throw out an occasional Marshall).”

Science Teacher, Mrs. Silverman reflects on Jonathan as a student,

“He’s consistently worked hard to understand the terminology in class and provided well-thought out answers and reflections. Jonathan is attentive and kind, not to mention the amount of focus it takes to be a student-athlete. It’s clear that Jonathan cares about his studies, and the fact that he is so successful in class points to his diligence. I wish him all the best!”

History Teacher, Mr. Pruden says,

“Jonathan was a pleasure to have in class.  He was a great student that contributed to a positive learning environment for everybody in our class.”

Jonathan will attend Occidental and continue his baseball career while pursuing a degree in biochemistry.
