SPRING VALLEY (8-23-19) – It was a night of first for the visiting Patrick Henry Patriots (1-0) as they were able to hold off a furious comeback attempt by the Mount Miguel Matadors (0-1).

It was a first for the Patriots as they earned new head coach JT O’Sullivan his first career victory on Friday night.

Patrick Henry who last season couldn’t muster much offense on the scoreboard had no issues with that one the evening. They would start by rolling with a 40-yard touchdown catch by Kai Jesse from Matthew Castillo and they would convert on the two-point conversion to lead 8-0.

After another score and two-point conversion, the Patriots would lead 16-0 and they would add onto that lead when the defense was able to procure a safety to lead 18-0.

The Matadors finally woke up and on the defensive side of the ball were able to pick off a Patriots pass. On the offensive side of the ball, Jacob Laverdiere was able to hook up with Jahiem Allen-Pompey for a 40-yard play. Unfortunately, they wouldn’t put any points on the board and would trail 18-0 at the half.

Mount Miguel in the second half finally woke up on the offensive side of the ball at Kojo Miller hauled in a Laverdiere pass for a 34-yard score to make it 18-6. They would pull within 18-13 after another touchdown strike.

Eventually, the Matadors took their first lead of the contest thanks to Allen-Pompey who hauled in a Laverdiere pass from 15-yards out to give them a 20-18 lead.

Patrick Henry though would retake the lead when big man Cameron Stoklosa hauled in a 51-yard pass to make it 26-20.

They would tack onto their lead towards the end of the third quarter when Castillo found Kadeem Bakare and a 2-point conversion would make it 34-20.

For the Matadors, Laverdiere would try to work some comeback magic as he was able to sneak one in from short yards out but unfortunately, time ran out.
