Week 3: Patrick Henry Patriots 39, Monte Vista Monarchs 36
By Maya Tunnell
The Monte Vista Monarchs headed to Patrick Henry High School on Friday night to try and claim a two-game victory streak.
However, after a breathtaking comeback by the Patriots, Patrick Henry secured the win in a high-scoring game, 39-36.
Early in the first quarter, Xavier Leyva, of Monte Vista, claimed the first touchdown of the game with a 12-yard run.
Shortly after, Omar Hammond, of Patrick Henry, responded with a clean catch to balance the scoreboard.
In the second quarter, Monte Vista closed out the first half on top, 21-13. The second half brought sweaty palms to the crowd and sidelines. With a total of five touchdowns and four interceptions, it was a half to remember.
In the third quarter, Isiah Gardner, of Monte Vista, widened the gap and made the score 28-13.
Bryce Johnson, of Patrick Henry, was not too thrilled about that. Late in the third, Johnson made an 8-yard run for a touchdown, making the score 28-19 in favor of Monte Vista.
After an outstanding interception by Johnson’s teammate, Josiah Lawson, Johnson ran the ball for another touchdown.
After two touchdowns in less than two minutes, the Patriots were fired up.
At the beginning of the fourth, Kai Jesse put Patrick Henry in the lead for the first time in the game with a catch, making the score 31-28.
Gardner quickly answered back with a 69-yard run for a touchdown, putting the Monarchs back in the lead, 36-31.
Although things looked promising for the Monarchs, the Patriots continued to knock on the door.
Towards the end of the fourth, Hammond made a highlight-worthy juggling catch inches from the end zone. To finish off the job, Jesse made a catch for the touchdown making the score 37-36 with little time remaining in the game.
Monte Vista had the last possession of the game but threw it away after Raymond Bernard, of Patrick Henry, made a game-saving interception. This was for sure a nail bitter and a well-fought game of tug-of-war that the Patrick Henry Patriots won.
