CIF Update Regarding Bylaws 600-605 and Cohorting

On February 10 the CIF State office released an announcement reinstating the Bylaw 600 waiver for the 2020-2021 school year. Read announcement here: CIF State Update

What does this mean? Student-Athletes can now participate in multiple sports. That means the opportunity to participate in multiple sports during a high school season as well as an opportunity to participate in club sports and high school at the same time.

Are there any exceptions? The only exception is Football. Athletes cannot participate in club football and high school football at the same time. In consultation with the CIF Sports Medicine Advisory Committee and given the California law (California Education Code 35179.5) regarding full-contact practice limitations and other safety regulations resulting from Assembly Bill 2127 (Cooley), Assembly Bill 1 (Cooper), and CIF Bylaws, students will not be allowed to participate on a high school football team and a club football team at the same time. No student is in violation of this Bylaw until they participate in a high school football game and subsequently participate in a club football game.

Why the change? The specific language by the CDPH was determined by the CIF State office to be a recommendation and not a mandate.
